According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Biodiesel Feedstock market size was valued at US$ 90119 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 128319 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.4% during review period.
In 2025, global sales volume for biodiesel feedstock is projected to reach 65,434 K tons, with an average price of $1,338 per ton.
Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable fuel primarily produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled cooking oils through a process known as transesterification. In this chemical reaction, fats or oils are combined with an alcohol (typically methanol) and a catalyst to yield fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Biodiesel is typically blended with petroleum-based diesel in various proportions (e.g., B5, B20, or B100), allowing it to be utilized in most existing diesel engines without the need for significant modifications. Compared to conventional diesel, biodiesel reduces emissions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter, unburned hydrocarbons, and sulfur oxides, thereby serving as an environmentally friendly alternative fuel for the transportation, power generation, and industrial heating sectors.
The raw materials and cost structure of biodiesel exhibit significant regional variations and differences based on production technology pathways. On a global scale, the feedstock supply structure has evolved into a diversified model dominated by vegetable oils, supplemented by waste fats and oils: in 2023, approximately 70% of biodiesel was produced from vegetable oils (comprising 29% palm oil, 23% soybean oil, and 14% rapeseed oil), while about 25% was derived from waste cooking oils. Due to policy constraints—specifically the principle of "not competing with humans for food, nor competing with food crops for land"—China relies almost exclusively on waste fats and oils (such as gutter oil, acidified oil, and waste frying oil) as feedstock. Although the annual output of waste fats and oils in China amounts to approximately 10 million tons, less than 10% of this volume is actually collected for biodiesel production. The feedstock supply chain is characterized by a highly dispersed pattern—described as "numerous points scattered across a wide area"—and is predominantly controlled by individual suppliers; consequently, collection presents significant logistical challenges, and associated costs are steadily rising. In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for 75% to over 90% of the total production cost of biodiesel, making them the absolute dominant factor. Processing costs primarily encompass auxiliary materials (such as methanol or ethanol), catalysts (acids, bases, or lipases), energy consumption (specifically steam and electricity required for transesterification or hydrogenation reactions), as well as equipment depreciation and labor expenses. When utilizing waste oils and fats as raw materials, producers incur additional costs associated with complex pretreatment processes (including decolorization, deodorization, impurity removal, and acid value reduction). Consequently, although the unit cost of raw materials for the "gutter oil" route is lower than that of vegetable oils, the overall processing costs are higher. Furthermore, the price of waste oils and fats is significantly influenced by—and closely correlated with—the prices of other vegetable oils (such as soybean and palm oil) as well as crude oil prices. In contrast, the Southeast Asian palm oil route and the Americas soybean oil route benefit from concentrated raw material sources and mature supply chains, resulting in relatively lower production costs; however, these routes face challenges regarding competition with the food industry for raw materials, as well as scrutiny regarding the sustainability of land use. Meanwhile, although second-generation hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) offers superior product performance, it entails complex upstream waste treatment processes and higher capital investment in equipment; currently, only a limited number of enterprises globally possess the capability for its mass production.
