This material then undergoes chemical purification processes such as the Siemens process or Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) process to produce polysilicon, the main solar-grade feedstock. The polysilicon is subsequently converted into ingots through Czochralski (monocrystalline) or directional solidification (multicrystalline) methods, followed by wafer slicing, solar cell fabrication, and module assembly. Upstream inputs include quartz, carbon reductants, electricity, and chlorosilanes, while downstream industries are dominated by photovoltaic wafer manufacturers, solar cell producers, and solar module manufacturers serving utility-scale solar farms, commercial solar installations, and residential PV systems. In 2025, global Solar Grade Silicon Feedstock output was about 2.9 million tons with 3.8 million tons of capacity, average prices of USD 7,500 – 12,000 per ton, and gross margins around 24%.
