Compared to pure tungsten electrodes, the addition of zirconiated oxide enhances electron emission capability, resistance to burn-off, arc stability, and resistance to contamination from melting. These electrodes are particularly well-suited for AC TIG welding, demonstrating superior performance when welding aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and other easily oxidized materials. Unlike thoriated tungsten electrodes, which contain the radioactive element thorium oxide (ThO₂), zirconiated tungsten electrodes are free of radioactive substances, offering better environmental and operational safety.
Technological advancements in zirconiated tungsten electrodes have primarily focused on enhancing ablation resistance, improving arc stability, mitigating radioactive risks, and ensuring manufacturing consistency. Conventional zirconium-tungsten electrodes typically utilize zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) as the primary dopant and are manufactured through processes such as powder metallurgy, pressing, sintering, wire drawing, and surface treatment. Current industry efforts to extend electrode service life and improve welding stability center on optimizing zirconia content, grain refinement, uniform doping, and composite rare-earth doping techniques. Meanwhile, driven by stricter environmental regulations, non-radioactive tungsten electrodes are increasingly replacing thoriated tungsten electrodes, leading to a rising adoption rate of eco-friendly alternatives such as zirconium-tungsten, cerium-tungsten, and lanthanum-tungsten electrodes.
