Unlike traditional thoriated tungsten electrodes (containing ThO₂), yttrium tungsten electrodes are free of radioactive elements, aligning with the trend toward environmentally friendly welding materials. Furthermore, compared to ceriated and lanthanated tungsten electrodes, yttrium tungsten electrodes demonstrate superior arc stability and high-temperature performance under high-current DC TIG welding conditions.
Technological advancements in yttrium tungsten electrodes primarily focus on enhancing electron emission capabilities, optimizing yttrium oxide distribution, extending electrode service life, and improving stability under high-current conditions. Current mainstream products typically feature a yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃) content of approximately 1.5%–2.0% and are manufactured through processes such as powder mixing, pressing, sintering, swaging and drawing, and precision grinding. Future technological trends include the use of high-purity tungsten powder, techniques for the uniform dispersion of nanoscale oxides, composite rare-earth doping, and the development of specialized electrodes optimized for automated welding equipment. Compared to traditional thoriated tungsten electrodes, yttriated tungsten electrodes align better with environmental protection trends; relative to lanthanated and ceriated tungsten electrodes, their advantages lie mainly in welding applications characterized by high currents, high temperatures, and the need for high reliability.
