Global sales of xeno-free medium reached 6,559 kiloliters in 2025, with an average price of US$156 per liter.
Xeno-free medium (XF) refers to a medium whose final product and primary raw materials contain no non-human animal-derived components and do not use recombinant proteins expressed using non-human animal DNA sequences. However, it is permissible to contain purified human proteins or recombinant proteins expressed by humans/plants/microorganisms.
The main ingredients are recombinant human albumin (rHSA, ~15% of cost), recombinant insulin (~8%), human/recombinant transferrin (~6%), as well as synthetic lipids, trace elements, and small molecule antioxidants (butylated hydroxytoluene, ascorbate phosphate, etc.). High-end formulations also include human Laminin-521 or Vitronectin fragments, with unit prices reaching 20,000–30,000 RMB/mg, driving up the overall cost. Since over 90% of proteins are expressed through recombinant yeast or CHO, fermentation-purification yield, endotoxin control, and batch scaling have become key price variables. Domestic supply chains have already replaced 60-70% of imports for rHSA and insulin, resulting in an average price reduction of approximately 20% in 2025 compared to 2022. However, key recombinant cytokines (bFGF, TGF-β) still rely on European and American manufacturers, accounting for 25-30% of material costs, and are the focus of the next stage of domestic substitution.
