Terminal Alkene refers to an alkene in which the carbon–carbon double bond is located at the end of the carbon chain, typically represented by the structure R–CH=CH₂. These compounds are highly reactive intermediates used widely in petrochemicals, polymer production, surfactants, lubricants, and specialty chemicals. The supply chain of terminal alkenes begins upstream with petrochemical feedstocks such as ethylene, propylene, and paraffins derived from crude oil or natural gas liquids through steam cracking or refining. In the midstream stage, terminal alkenes are produced through processes such as ethylene oligomerization, paraffin dehydrogenation, Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, or catalytic cracking, yielding products like 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, and higher alpha-olefins. In the downstream stage, these molecules are used as comonomers in polyethylene production (LLDPE, HDPE), raw materials for synthetic lubricants (PAO), detergent alcohols, plasticizers, surfactants, and specialty chemicals, serving end-user sectors including packaging, automotive, consumer chemicals, oil & gas, and industrial manufacturing. In 2025, global Terminal Alkene output was about 9 million tons with 12 million tons of capacity, average prices of USD 1,200 – 1,900 per ton, and gross margins around 13%.
