According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Steel Pipe for Gaseous Hydrogen Storage and Transportation Pipelines market size was valued at US$ 284 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 938 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 18.6% during review period.
Steel pipe for gaseous hydrogen storage and transportation pipelines, also referred to as hydrogen transmission steel pipe or dedicated hydrogen transportation steel pipe, comprises newly manufactured seamless and welded steel pipe designed for pure gaseous hydrogen, hydrogen-blended natural gas and hydrogen-ready pipeline networks. Principal applications include long-distance hydrogen transmission, regional distribution, industrial-cluster and plant pipelines, underground hydrogen-storage connections, and links between hydrogen production facilities and downstream users. Main product types include seamless pipe, high-frequency welded pipe, longitudinal submerged-arc welded pipe and helical submerged-arc welded pipe, together with coated, internally lined, end-finished and prefabricated pipe products.
Compared with conventional natural-gas line pipe, hydrogen transmission steel pipe must satisfy additional requirements relating to hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-assisted fatigue-crack growth, fracture-toughness degradation and leakage. Qualification covers the base metal, weld seam and heat-affected zone. Strength grades such as Grade B, X42, X52, X60, X65 and X70 do not by themselves demonstrate hydrogen compatibility. This report includes steel pipe specifically manufactured for pure-hydrogen, hydrogen-blended or hydrogen-ready service, while excluding flexible composite hydrogen pipe, steel plate and strip, valves, fittings, compressors, pipeline-repurposing services and complete EPC contracts.
Global steel pipe shipments for gaseous hydrogen storage and transportation pipelines were approximately 120,000 tonnes in 2025, with an average FOB price of approximately US$2,300 per tonne and an estimated manufacturing gross margin of 18% to 28%.
The hydrogen transmission steel pipe market is evolving from short captive pipelines within refineries and chemical plants toward regional industrial networks, dedicated pure-hydrogen trunk lines and hydrogen-blended natural-gas systems. Direct-reduced iron, refining, ammonia, methanol, synthetic-fuel and underground-storage projects require stable, high-volume hydrogen supply. Once transmission volume and distance reach sufficient scale, pipelines can provide stronger economies of scale than compressed-gas road transportation. China’s introduction of a dedicated national standard indicates that hydrogen transmission steel pipe is beginning to develop into an independent product category with its own material-design, manufacturing, testing and acceptance requirements.
Demand will develop through two parallel routes: pure-hydrogen transmission and hydrogen-blended natural-gas transportation. Blended systems can make partial use of existing natural-gas infrastructure and are more likely to generate near-term demonstration and procurement demand. Dedicated pure-hydrogen pipelines will serve refineries, steel plants, chemical facilities and storage sites, but require stricter control of material cleanliness, weld properties, fatigue-crack growth and pressure-cycle performance. Commercial deployment of hydrogen-qualified X52M and other line-pipe grades demonstrates that the market is moving beyond laboratory testing toward full-scale engineering validation.
Expansion remains constrained by project economics, long-term hydrogen offtake agreements and uncertain network utilisation. Less than 6% of announced hydrogen pipeline length had reached final investment decision by 2025, while a significant share of Europe’s planned network is expected to rely on repurposed gas infrastructure rather than newly manufactured pipe. Competitive advantage will therefore depend less on nominal steelmaking capacity and more on hydrogen-environment testing, weld and heat-affected-zone performance, large-diameter HFW and LSAW manufacturing, high-pressure seamless-pipe capability, coating and bending services, and full product traceability.
