Sodium Metaphosphate Glass (NaPO₃ glass) is an amorphous phosphate glass composed primarily of sodium metaphosphate chains, produced by melting and rapidly cooling sodium phosphate compounds. It is characterized by high solubility, good film-forming ability, ion-exchange capability, and chemical reactivity, making it useful in water treatment, detergents, specialty ceramics, dental materials, and controlled-release formulations. The supply chain begins upstream with raw materials such as phosphoric acid, sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide, and phosphate minerals (phosphate rock). These inputs are processed through neutralization and polymerization reactions to form sodium metaphosphate, which is then melted at high temperatures (typically 700–1000 °C) and rapidly quenched to produce metaphosphate glass flakes, powders, or granules. Midstream processing includes glass grinding, particle-size classification, and blending for different formulations. Downstream, the material is supplied to industries such as water treatment (sequestrants and scale inhibitors), detergents, ceramics and refractories, dental and biomedical materials, coatings, and specialty chemical formulations where its glassy phosphate structure provides controlled dissolution and functional ion release. In 2025, global Sodium Metaphosphate Glass output was about 35,000 tons with 50,000 tons of capacity, average prices of USD 9,500 – 17,000 per ton, and gross margins around 31%.
