Their main trade-offs are higher noise, dust and rotor wear compared with NAO organic or ceramic pads. Upstream materials include steel fibers, iron powder, copper materials, graphite, phenolic resin, rubber, abrasives, fillers and backing plates; downstream demand comes from OEMs, brake system suppliers, repair shops and branded aftermarket channels. Semi-metallic pads are preferred where heat dissipation and stopping power are important.

Semi-Metallic brake pads are brake friction components made with a resin-based binder system and a relatively high proportion of metallic fibers or powders, such as steel fiber, copper fiber, iron powder, copper powder, graphite, mineral fillers, abrasives, lubricants, and friction modifiers. They are mainly used in passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, SUVs, pickup trucks, selected motorcycles, and the replacement aftermarket. Compared with organic brake pads, semi-metallic pads generally provide better thermal conductivity, braking force, high-temperature resistance, fade resistance, and suitability for high-load conditions. Compared with ceramic pads, they are often stronger in towing, mountain driving, commercial-vehicle use, and repeated high-temperature braking, but they typically generate more noise, brake dust, and rotor wear.
By application scenario, Semi-metallic brake pads can be segmented into passenger-car semi-metallic pads, SUV and pickup semi-metallic pads, light-commercial-vehicle semi-metallic pads, medium- and heavy-duty commercial-vehicle semi-metallic pads, and high-performance replacement semi-metallic pads. Passenger-car applications focus on braking response, cost, service life, and comfort balance. SUVs, pickups, and light commercial vehicles place more emphasis on thermal stability under higher vehicle weight, towing, cargo loading, and long downhill braking. Medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles require repeated braking capability, wear life, rotor or drum compatibility, and lower maintenance cost.
From a material and performance standpoint, semi-metallic brake pads sit between organic pads, ceramic pads, and sintered metallic pads. Metallic fibers and powders help improve heat transfer, friction stability, and high-temperature braking force. Graphite and lubricant phases help stabilize the tribofilm, reduce wear, and manage noise, while abrasives and fillers influence rotor cleaning, friction coefficient, and wear resistance. Compared with organic pads, semi-metallic pads are more suitable for high-temperature, high-speed, heavy-load, and frequent-braking use. Compared with ceramic pads, they often deliver stronger initial bite and higher thermal capacity, but weaker comfort and dust performance. Compared with sintered pads, they usually offer lower manufacturing cost and better everyday drivability, although their extreme-temperature and high-energy braking capability is generally lower than that of sintered metallic materials.
From an industry perspective, demand for Semi-Metallic Brake Pads is mainly driven by commercial vehicles, SUVs and pickups, towing and high-load vehicles, the replacement aftermarket, and selected performance vehicles. As ceramic pads gain share in comfort-oriented passenger-car applications, semi-metallic pads may face some pressure in standard passenger vehicles. However, they remain well positioned in heavy-load, high-temperature, mountainous, commercial, and value-oriented replacement applications.
