A PIN photodiode is a semiconductor optical sensor characterized by its three-layer structure, consisting of a positively doped (P) layer, an intrinsic (I) layer, and a negatively doped (N) layer. Its key feature lies in the wide undoped intrinsic region between the P and N layers. When reverse-biased, this intrinsic layer forms a large depletion region with a strong electric field. When light enters this region, electron-hole pairs are generated, which are rapidly separated by the electric field, thus generating a current. This design minimizes capacitance and transit time, achieving fast response and linear light-to-electricity conversion. The upstream of the PIN photodiode industry chain includes raw materials and epitaxial/wafer substrates for PIN, high-purity gases, etching solutions, etc.; the midstream consists of PIN photodiode manufacturers; and the downstream mainly comprises industries such as aerospace, consumer electronics, and automotive.
PIN photodiodes are high-performance semiconductor photodetectors that utilize a P-I-N structure to form a wide built-in depletion region under reverse bias. They absorb photons to generate electron-hole pairs, which are then rapidly separated and collected by an electric field, achieving a linear response between light intensity and current. Currently, the market demand for PIN photodiodes in optical communication, sensing, and laser ranging is steadily growing. The mainstream materials are silicon PIN and InGaAs PIN, covering the visible to near-infrared bands.
