According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Mu Metal market size was valued at US$ 195 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 283 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.4% during review period.
In 2025, global Mu Metal production reached approximately 3,580 tons, with an average global market price of around 53 US$/kg.
Mu Metal is a high-permeability soft magnetic nickel–iron alloy mainly used for shielding static and low-frequency magnetic fields. Its typical composition is about 77–82% nickel, with iron as the balance and small additions of molybdenum, manganese or silicon to improve magnetic permeability, low coercivity and low hysteresis loss. Commercial grades include MuMETAL®, MUMETALL®, HyMu 80 and similar Ni-Fe-Mo alloys. After precision melting, rolling and controlled hydrogen or vacuum annealing, Mu Metal can provide very high magnetic permeability, making it suitable for magnetic shielding cans, foils, sheets, transformer cores, medical imaging systems, sensors, aerospace electronics, precision instruments and low-field magnetic protection applications.
The average single-line production capacity of Mu Metal is 23 tons, the average gross profit margin was 31.7%.
The Mu Metal industry chain starts with upstream raw materials such as high-purity nickel, iron, molybdenum, manganese, silicon and specialty alloy additives, plus vacuum melting equipment, rolling mills, annealing furnaces and quality-control instruments. The midstream consists of alloy producers that conduct vacuum induction melting, hot/cold rolling, strip or foil forming, heat treatment, slitting, stamping and magnetic property testing to produce Mu Metal sheet, foil, strip, bar and fabricated shielding components. Downstream demand mainly comes from magnetic shielding, aerospace and defense electronics, medical imaging, particle accelerators, power electronics, precision sensors, transformers, audio equipment, scientific instruments and semiconductor or laboratory equipment.
Mu Metal cost is dominated by raw materials, especially high nickel content, which usually accounts for about 55%–65% of total cost; molybdenum and other alloying elements account for about 5%–8%; energy, vacuum melting, rolling and annealing account for around 10%–15%; labor and manufacturing overhead account for 8%–12%; precision testing, magnetic-property certification and yield loss account for 5%–8%; packaging, logistics and other expenses account for about 3%–5%. Because final magnetic performance depends heavily on controlled annealing and low-stress processing, Mu Metal has a much higher value-added premium than ordinary nickel alloy sheet.
Demand for Mu Metal is driven by the need for high-performance magnetic shielding in medical imaging, aerospace electronics, precision measurement, quantum devices, semiconductor equipment, electric power systems and advanced sensors. Business opportunities are strongest in customized shielding parts, ultra-thin foil, high-permeability strip, cryogenic magnetic shielding, precision sensor shielding and low-noise scientific instruments. As electronic systems become smaller, more sensitive and more exposed to electromagnetic interference, suppliers with stable alloy composition control, advanced annealing capability and custom fabrication capacity can capture higher-margin opportunities in medical, defense, laboratory and high-end industrial equipment markets.
