Marine flexible pipe systems refer to multilayer flexible pipe products used for offshore oil and gas production, subsea transportation, floating production system connections, water or gas injection, multiphase flow transfer and deepwater tie-back applications. These systems are typically composed of an internal liner, pressure reinforcement layers, tensile reinforcement layers, anti-wear layers, outer sheath and integrated end fittings. Depending on the technology route, they may adopt unbonded flexible structures, thermoplastic composite structures, steel-reinforced structures, fiber-reinforced structures or hybrid configurations. Their core function is to safely transport oil, gas, water, multiphase fluids and injection media under high pressure, corrosive service, CO₂/H₂S exposure, complex seabed topology and dynamic floating-unit motion. Major product forms include subsea flowlines, dynamic risers, flexible jumpers, injection lines, export lines and marginal-field flexible pipe systems.
In 2025, global marine flexible pipe systems production reached approximately 7,000 km, with an average global market price is $350-450 per meter.
From a global industry perspective, marine flexible pipe systems have evolved from standalone flexible pipes or hose products into critical engineering units for marine fluid transfer and system connection. Compared with rigid steel pipelines, flexible pipe systems are better suited to marine environments involving waves, currents, vessel or platform motion, seabed unevenness and restricted installation space, and can be used in dynamic risers, subsea jumpers, floating production facility connections, offshore loading hoses, seawater intake/discharge and selected ship-to-shore transfer applications. By technology route, unbonded flexible pipes mainly serve production, export and injection applications as flowlines, risers and jumpers; API 17J covers unbonded flexible pipe assemblies with end fittings and excludes bonded flexible pipes. Bonded flexible pipes are covered by API 17K and can be used as flowlines, risers, jumpers and offshore loading and discharge hoses, while thermoplastic composite pipes are addressed by DNV-ST-F119 for offshore design, load analysis and reliability requirements.
In terms of industry trends, marine flexible pipe systems are moving toward deeper-water capability, higher pressure ratings, corrosion resistance, lightweighting, modular connection, standardized qualification, online monitoring and lifecycle integrity management. Traditional marine flexible pipes focused mainly on pressure resistance, tensile capacity, bending fatigue and seawater corrosion resistance, while current system-level solutions increasingly emphasize end-fitting reliability, dynamic configuration design, bend protection, outer-sheath integrity, rapid gas decompression resistance, sour-service compatibility, installation-risk control and condition assessment during operation. As marine engineering expands into deepwater, floating production, marginal fields, offshore loading, brownfield upgrades and low-carbon offshore energy applications, flexible pipe systems are increasingly integrated with fibre-optic sensing, corrosion monitoring, temperature and pressure monitoring, digital integrity assessment and risk-based maintenance to form monitorable, maintainable and assessable marine engineering assets.
