According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Carbon Fluoride Battery market size was valued at US$ 396 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 776 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 10.4% during review period.
In 2025, global sales of carbon fluoride batteries are projected to reach 172 million units, with an average unit price of $2.24.
The carbon fluoride battery (Li/CFx battery) is a high-energy primary lithium battery utilizing fluorinated graphite (CFx) as the cathode and metallic lithium as the anode. Its theoretical specific energy reaches as high as 2,180 Wh/kg—the highest among all solid-cathode battery systems. Characterized by stable voltage, a wide operating temperature range, a long lifespan (exceeding 10 years), and high safety, it is often hailed as the "King of Batteries" and finds extensive application in the aerospace, medical device, and defense industries.
Within the realm of primary lithium batteries, carbon fluoride batteries constitute a niche, high-end category rather than the largest-volume segment. The global primary lithium battery market remains predominantly dominated by lithium-manganese and lithium-thionyl chloride batteries.
The core raw materials for carbon fluoride batteries fall into four main categories: carbon fluoride cathode materials, metallic lithium anodes, electrolytes, and separators/casings. Carbon fluoride cathode material represents a critical "bottleneck" in the entire industry chain. Currently, it is primarily synthesized via high-temperature gas-phase fluorination; this process utilizes high-purity carbon materials (such as graphite, carbon nanotubes, and graphene) as precursors, reacting them with fluorine gas (F₂) or a fluorine-nitrogen mixture at temperatures between 300°C and 600°C to produce CFx. This technology has long been monopolized by Japan, the United States, and Russia. Domestically, the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) achieved a breakthrough in 2023 by elevating the purity of carbon fluoride cathode materials to 99.5%, thereby resolving the technical challenge posed by "fluorine gas impurities." However, high-purity fluorine gas—which accounts for 40% of raw material costs—still requires importation; in 2023, fluctuations in international fluorochemical prices caused the cost of this material to vary by as much as 25%. The metallic lithium anode component relies on the refining of lithium resources; consequently, the price of battery-grade metallic lithium is subject to market linkages with the broader lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide markets. Within the cost structure, fluorinated carbon cathode materials account for the largest share (approximately 35–45%), followed by lithium metal anodes (approx. 20–25%), electrolytes and separators (approx. 15–20%), and manufacturing overheads and equipment depreciation (approx. 15–20%). Since the fluorination reaction involves highly toxic fluorine gas, production equipment requires specialized corrosion-resistant materials (such as Monel alloy and nickel-based alloys), necessitating substantial capital investment. Furthermore, the reaction conditions are extremely rigorous—requiring precise control over temperature, pressure, and leak prevention—which results in disproportionately high manufacturing costs. Consequently, the overall cost is approximately 2 to 3 times that of Li/MnO₂ batteries and 2.5 times that of lithium-ion batteries; this constitutes the primary bottleneck currently hindering their large-scale commercial adoption in the civilian sector.
