Upon hydrogenation, the polyisoprene soft segments are converted into an ethylene-propylene structure; diblock products are typically designated as SEP, while triblock products are known as SEPS. The polystyrene hard segments provide physical cross-linking and mechanical strength, whereas the ethylene-propylene soft segments impart elasticity, flexibility, oil compatibility, and low-temperature performance. These products combine thermoplastic processability with transparency, heat resistance, weather resistance, and ozone resistance.
Upstream raw materials primarily include styrene, isoprene, and hydrogen; styrene forms the rigid end blocks, while isoprene forms the elastomeric soft segments that undergo subsequent hydrogenation. Production also requires high-purity hydrocarbon polymerization solvents, organolithium initiators, coupling agents, selective hydrogenation catalysts, antioxidants, and stabilizers. Midstream production typically encompasses stages such as raw material purification, anionic block polymerization, molecular structure control, selective hydrogenation, catalyst removal, solvent recovery, devolatilization, and pelletization.
In 2025, global sales volume is approximately 55,000 tonnes, with prices ranging from roughly $4,700 to $5,500 per tonne; the gross profit margin for major manufacturers is approximately 22%–35%.
Growth in the hydrogenated styrene-isoprene block copolymer industry is primarily driven by demand for highly transparent flexible materials, cosmetic oil gels, medical tubing and packaging, plasticizer-free soft materials, polyolefin modification, and high-performance adhesives.
