The core upstream raw material is furfuryl alcohol, which is typically produced via the catalytic hydrogenation of furfural—a substance derived from pentoses found in biomass such as corncobs and sugarcane bagasse. The dosage and purity of furfuryl alcohol directly influence the resin's high-temperature strength, gas evolution, and production cost. Other key raw materials include formaldehyde, urea, and phenol: urea is used to enhance ambient-temperature strength and manage costs, though excessive levels may increase the risk of nitrogen porosity; phenol primarily improves heat resistance and suitability for steel casting. Auxiliary materials include formaldehyde scavengers, silane coupling agents, stabilizers, and diluents. Midstream enterprises carry out polycondensation, dehydration, blending, and quality testing, and sell the products alongside curing agents such as p-toluenesulfonic acid and xylenesulfonic acid. Downstream, foundries utilize these resins in sand molding, sand core making, and reclaimed sand systems to support the production of cast iron, cast steel, and certain non-ferrous metal castings.
In 2025, global sales volume for foundry furan resins is projected to reach approximately 540,000 metric tons, with an average selling price of around US$1,300 per ton and gross profit margins for major manufacturers ranging from 15% to 25%.
