Anhydrous magnesium sulfate, chemical formula: MgSO4, colorless orthorhombic crystal. Soluble in water, ethanol, glycerin, insoluble in acetone. It is used in the pharmaceutical and printing and dyeing industries. It can also be used as a desiccant, feed, fertilizer or compound fertilizer. It is also a raw material for the production of magnesium oxide.In 2024, global Anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate production reached approximately 605 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 218 per MT.
The anhydrous magnesium sulfate market is a focused, somewhat more specialized slice of the broader magnesium salt and drying-agent industry, with demand spread across pharmaceuticals, food and feed additives, chemical processing, plastics and rubber, and various industrial applications where a robust, non-volatile desiccant or magnesium source is needed. Unlike the more familiar heptahydrate “Epsom salt,” the anhydrous form is valued for its water-free composition and strong hygroscopicity, making it well suited for use in drying organic solvents, stabilizing moisture-sensitive formulations, and serving as a drying agent in gas and air treatment. The market is mid-sized in value relative to other basic inorganic salts, and it tends to grow slowly but steadily in line with industrial production, pharmaceutical and food-processing activity, and the expansion of high-value chemical synthesis and specialty materials manufacturing in both mature and emerging regions.
Across the industry chain, the upstream segment begins with magnesium-bearing raw materials and basic chemicals: producers mine ores such as magnesite or dolomite, exploit magnesium-rich brines and bitterns, or use intermediate magnesium compounds like magnesium oxide or hydroxide, then react these with sulfuric acid to form magnesium sulfate solutions. These solutions are purified to remove impurities (metals, organics, insolubles), then concentrated and processed through crystallization and drying routes designed specifically to minimize bound water and deliver the anhydrous product; this may involve sequential dehydration of hydrated forms or direct generation followed by high-temperature drying and controlled cooling. Midstream, manufacturers mill, classify and sometimes surface-treat the material to obtain different particle sizes and flow characteristics, and they produce various grades—technical, feed, food and pharmaceutical—each meeting distinct purity, heavy metal, microbiological and documentation requirements. Downstream, anhydrous magnesium sulfate is used by chemical and pharmaceutical companies as a drying agent in synthesis and purification steps, by plastics and rubber compounders as a filler and processing aid, by feed and food formulators as a magnesium and sulfur nutrient source, and by producers of specialty desiccants, construction materials, fertilizers and industrial products, with distributors and traders bridging smaller end users and global producers.
The main demand-side driving factors for anhydrous magnesium sulfate are its role as a cost-effective, widely accepted desiccant and process aid in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, its function as a nutrient source in feed and food applications where tight moisture control is also important, and its use as a functional additive in plastics, rubber, construction and other industrial formulations; counterbalancing these are competition from alternative drying agents and fillers (such as molecular sieves, silica gels, other sulfates and carbonates), exposure to raw-material and energy cost fluctuations, and progressively stricter regulatory and quality requirements for high-purity grades that raise production and compliance costs. Taken together, these factors mean that producers of anhydrous magnesium sulfate generally achieve modest-to-moderate gross profit margins, most commonly in the range of about 12–25%, with margins toward the higher end for pharmaceutical-, food- and specialty-grade materials and toward the lower end for bulk industrial grades closely tied to commodity pricing and large-volume contracts.
