According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Zirconium Oxychloride for Zirconium Chemicals market size was valued at US$ 306 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 460 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.7% during review period.
In 2025, global production of zirconium oxychloride intended for zirconium chemicals reached 142,000 metric tons, with an average price of $2,092 per ton.
Zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl₂·8H₂O)—also known as zirconyl chloride—used for zirconium chemicals refers to the product meeting the purity standards required for the manufacture of various zirconium-based fine chemicals. It serves as the core intermediate raw material in the zirconium chemical industry chain; through calcination, it yields industrial-grade and high-purity zirconium oxide, while metathesis reactions allow for the production of dozens of zirconium-based chemicals, such as zirconium carbonate, zirconium sulfate, zirconium nitrate, and zirconium hydroxide. These chemicals are widely applied in sectors including ceramics, catalysts, textiles, coatings, refractories, electronics, and the nuclear industry, acting as strategic foundational materials that underpin the development of the zirconium chemical industry.
The raw material system for this grade of zirconium oxychloride centers on zircon sand (ZrSiO₄), supplemented by chemical inputs such as caustic soda (NaOH), hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid, aqueous ammonia, and sodium carbonate. Zircon sand is the sole mineral source for producing zirconium oxychloride; global resources are highly concentrated in Australia and South Africa, resulting in China's extreme reliance on imports, which account for over 90% of its supply. Producing one ton of zirconium oxychloride consumes approximately 0.6–0.7 tons of zircon sand, and price fluctuations in standard 65% grade zircon sand directly impact production costs—manufacturers typically raise product prices in tandem with increases in zircon sand costs. Caustic soda is used for the alkali fusion decomposition of zircon sand—a key step in the alkali fusion process (often referred to as the "one-acid, one-alkali" method)—requiring a high-temperature reaction (600–800°C) with the sand; industrial flake caustic soda prices have remained high in recent years. Hydrochloric acid is utilized in acid leaching/transformation and pickling stages; sulfuric acid is employed for acidolysis in certain process routes; and aqueous ammonia or sodium carbonate is used to precipitate downstream products such as zirconium hydroxide or zirconium carbonate. In addition, some enterprises are exploring the recovery of associated elements—such as zirconium, scandium, and rare earths—from the crystallization mother liquor of zirconium oxychloride to enhance the efficiency of comprehensive resource utilization.
Regarding the cost structure, raw material costs represent the largest expenditure for zirconium oxychloride (used in zirconium chemicals), typically accounting for 50%–60% of total production costs. Zircon sand and caustic soda constitute the vast majority of these raw material costs, directly determining the product's cost floor. Energy costs account for approximately 15%–25%; the alkali fusion process requires high temperatures and consumes significant amounts of steam and electricity, while the concentration and crystallization stages also require substantial thermal energy to evaporate water. Environmental treatment costs make up about 10%–15%; the alkali fusion process generates roughly 0.5–0.7 tons of silicon slag and large volumes of alkaline wastewater per ton of zirconium oxychloride produced. Storing acidic waste silicon slag occupies land and pollutes the environment, and treating waste alkaline liquor is expensive. Although process improvements can convert waste silicon slag into silicon dioxide by-products for resource utilization, the initial investment required is substantial. Equipment depreciation and maintenance costs account for approximately 5%–10%; the equipment for the alkali fusion method is relatively simple (cast-iron pots, rotary kilns, reactors, filter presses, etc.), requiring less investment than the boiling chlorination method. Labor and management costs account for approximately 5%–10%.
