X-ray screening systems are complete security inspection devices or integrated systems that use transmission X-ray imaging, dual-energy or multi-energy material discrimination, multi-view imaging, computed tomography, backscatter imaging and digital image processing to perform non-intrusive inspection of people, mail, parcels, carry-on baggage, checked baggage, air cargo, palletized freight, vehicles, railway wagons and containers without opening or dismantling the inspected object. A typical system consists of an X-ray generator, collimation and beam-control components, detector arrays, conveying or scanning mechanisms, radiation shielding, image acquisition and processing units, an operator workstation, material discrimination functions and threat-recognition algorithms. Vehicle and container systems may additionally incorporate a gantry, mobile platform, vehicle-positioning devices, exclusion-zone controls and remote operating facilities, while portable systems generally combine a portable X-ray source, digital detector panel and image-processing workstation.
The report covers portable suspicious-object inspection equipment, cabinet-type mail and parcel scanners, conveyorized baggage and cargo screening machines, cabin-baggage and checked-baggage CT systems, air-cargo and pallet screening systems, low-dose personnel X-ray screening systems, and high-energy vehicle, rail-wagon and container inspection systems. Personnel X-ray systems remain relevant in correctional and border applications, although millimeter-wave technology has become more common for airport passenger screening.

The X-ray screening market is not undergoing a complete and immediate replacement of 2D systems by CT equipment. Instead, it is developing into a two-layer structure in which conventional 2D systems continue to account for most unit shipments, while CT systems drive a disproportionate share of market-value growth. Single-view and dual-view systems remain widely used in hotels, government buildings, schools, courts, correctional facilities, factories, public transportation and smaller logistics facilities. Airport cabin-baggage and checked-baggage screening represent the most concentrated areas of CT adoption. The TSA procurement framework covers up to 1,214 CT systems, and its capital planning indicates that CT deployment remains a multi-year modernization program. Smiths Detection announced the sale of its 2,000th HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX in March 2026, demonstrating that checkpoint CT has moved beyond pilot deployment into commercial-scale adoption.
The value of CT is not limited to providing a rotatable 3D image. CT systems generate volumetric voxel data and reconstructed slices, creating a stronger data foundation for the automatic detection of explosives, liquids and threats concealed by overlapping objects. Their X-ray sources, detector arrays, rotating or distributed-source acquisition architectures, reconstruction computing platforms and certification requirements are more complex than those of conventional 2D systems. CT deployment is therefore frequently accompanied by checkpoint-lane redesign, automated tray-return equipment, remote image analysis and network-management upgrades.
Growth outside aviation is being driven by customs, ports, borders, logistics, correctional facilities, critical infrastructure and industrial sites. Conventional baggage and parcel systems generate higher unit volumes, while high-energy vehicle and container systems account for fewer installations but substantially higher value per system, greater project complexity and more significant service revenue. OSI Systems reported 14.7% revenue growth in its Security Division in fiscal 2025, supported by cargo and vehicle inspection systems, checkpoint screening and service revenue.
Future competition will increasingly focus on AI-based prohibited-item detection, lower false-alarm rates, centralized and remote image interpretation, multi-vendor system networking, open software interfaces and cybersecurity. Smiths Detection’s iCMORE algorithms support automated object recognition across baggage, cargo, vehicle and container images, while NUCTECH is developing its NucMind platform around AI-enabled customs and security-screening applications.
Fully autonomous screening is not yet the standard operating model in most regulated applications. The dominant architecture remains algorithm-assisted detection followed by operator confirmation and intervention. Regulatory certification, auditability, liability allocation and extremely low missed-detection requirements will limit the speed at which human operators can be removed from the decision process.
Long-term industry barriers include high-voltage X-ray source and detector design, radiation safety, CT reconstruction algorithms, threat-recognition training data, aviation and government certification, complex project delivery and global lifecycle support. Aftermarket revenue is strategically important, but maintenance, spare parts, upgrades and standalone software services should be separated from the equipment market when calculating shipments and average selling prices.
