Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is an advanced additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology that uses an electric arc as the heat source to deposit metal wire onto a substrate, layer by layer, to build up a three-dimensional object. This technology is particularly suited for producing large, complex metal parts with high-strength materials. It is a rapid, cost-effective method for producing large metal parts with reduced material waste compared to traditional subtractive manufacturing methods like machining.
Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is suitable for producing large, thick-walled metal components with low to medium precision requirements (near-net-shape forming + subsequent machining). In the aerospace, shipbuilding, energy, and heavy industry sectors, it is increasingly used to replace long-lead-time forging/casting. Industry competition is gradually shifting towards process window stability, residual stress and deformation control, porosity/crack defect management, and auditable quality traceability (parameter recording, process monitoring, NDT reports).
Through molten pool vision, infrared thermography, arc voltage/current waveform, layer height measurement, and laser contour scanning, interlayer adaptive compensation, heat input control, and improved repeatability are achieved. More solutions are moving towards hybrid manufacturing (WAAM forming + CNC finishing), coupled with stress-relieving heat treatment/aging treatment to improve microstructure and dimensional stability; simultaneously, the demand for "remanufacturing" (repair and remanufacturing of high-value components) is growing.
