Water based chlorinated polyolefins are a class of aqueous dispersions primarily composed of chlorinated polyolefins—specifically chlorinated polypropylene or modified chlorinated polyolefins—that have undergone aqueous emulsification, dispersion, or neutralization treatments. These products are primarily utilized for the surface treatment of low-surface-energy polyolefin substrates, such as PP, PE, TPO, and EPDM. By forming an interfacial bonding layer between the substrate and water-based coatings, inks, or adhesives, they enhance coating adhesion, water resistance, abrasion resistance, and application stability.
The upstream supply chain for water-based chlorinated polyolefins mainly comprises basic polyolefin resins—such as polypropylene and polyethylene—as well as chlorinating agents, graft-modification monomers, and emulsifiers. The midstream segment encompasses processes such as chlorination modification, acid modification or resin compounding, aqueous emulsification and dispersion, particle size control, pH and storage stability adjustment, formulation blending, and quality testing. Downstream applications primarily focus on resolving issues related to coating delamination caused by the low surface energy and poor polarity inherent in polyolefin materials. Compliant with eco-friendly, low-VOC regulations, these products serve as ideal additives for environmentally friendly water-based coatings, inks, and adhesives.
By 2025, global sales volume is projected to reach approximately 38,000 tons, with prices ranging from approximately $5,100 to $7,200 per ton and a gross profit margin of approximately 30% to 45%.
Water-based chlorinated polyolefins (WCPO) essentially serve as water-based adhesion promoters designed for low-surface-energy polyolefin substrates such as PP, TPO, and PE. Industry growth is primarily driven by advancements in the coating of automotive plastic components, plastic casings for consumer electronics, packaging inks, adhesives, and the upgrading of water-based coating systems.
