Vertical Measurement Projector, also known as a Vertical Optical Comparator or Vertical Measurement Projector, is a non-contact dimensional metrology instrument that places a workpiece on a horizontal stage and uses a vertical optical path to project or digitally reproduce a magnified silhouette or surface image for two-dimensional inspection. Measurements may be taken with screen crosshairs and overlays, digital encoders and geometric readouts, automatic edge detectors, cameras, telecentric optics and software-based feature recognition. The scope includes manual, digital-readout, video-assisted, full-field digital, benchtop and floor-standing vertical systems sold as complete new instruments. It excludes horizontal-light-path comparators, general-purpose projectors, measuring microscopes, coordinate measuring machines, generic vision measuring machines without profile-projector positioning, separately sold accessories, used equipment, calibration services and duplicated distributor resale. The 2025 ASP is approximately US$18,040 per unit, global sales volume is approximately 11,197 units, and the estimated average gross margin is approximately 40%. Upstream inputs include optical glass, telecentric and projection lenses, mirrors, LEDs, cameras, glass screens, precision stages, linear encoders, bearings, cast structures, controllers, computers and measurement software. Midstream activities include optical design, mechanical machining, stage assembly, optical alignment, illumination integration, encoder compensation, software development, calibration, accuracy verification and system configuration. Downstream users include automotive and transportation manufacturers, machinery and metalworking companies, tool and mold makers, electronics and semiconductor manufacturers, aerospace and defense suppliers, medical-device producers, plastics and rubber processors, research institutes, calibration laboratories and vocational education facilities.
Vertical geometry remains attractive for small, flat and lightweight parts because the workpiece can rest naturally on a horizontal glass stage. Gaskets, stamped pieces, circuit boards, thin plastic parts and small precision components can often be loaded without complex clamping, reducing handling time and deformation risk.
Traditional screen-based projection is evolving rather than disappearing. Digital readouts, encoder compensation, automatic edge detection and software-generated geometric results improve repeatability while retaining the intuitive full-profile view valued by shop-floor inspectors.
Full-field digital profile projectors are the fastest-moving premium segment. Telecentric lenses, high-resolution cameras and automatic feature recognition allow operators to place a part in almost any orientation, run a stored program and obtain pass/fail results and reports within seconds.
The market faces substitution from video measuring machines and large-field-of-view vision systems. Conventional projectors remain competitive where operators need a direct silhouette, low training burden, rapid visual comparison with an overlay and lower capital cost, while digital systems win where traceability and throughput are more important.
Measurement performance depends on more than nominal encoder resolution. Lens distortion, telecentricity, stage straightness and squareness, focus, illumination stability, screen calibration, part flatness, temperature and operator interpretation can all influence the result.
LED illumination is replacing halogen lamps because it offers longer life, lower heat generation and more stable brightness. Programmable transmitted and reflected lighting is especially useful for parts with mixed edges, dark finishes, molded details or reflective surfaces.
Modular objective lenses and stage sizes remain important selection criteria. Low magnification provides a wider field of view for large outlines, while higher magnification supports small radii, narrow slots and fine edge features; buyers must balance field of view, working distance and measurement uncertainty.
Software connectivity is becoming a stronger purchasing factor. Export to statistical-process-control systems, quality-management databases and manufacturing records reduces manual transcription and supports lot traceability, but it also raises requirements for data integrity, cybersecurity and software maintenance.
Calibration practice remains fragmented. Mitutoyo notes that no comprehensive international or American national standard specifically governs profile-projector specification and points to Japanese Industrial Standard JIS B 7184:1999 as an important technical reference. Buyers should therefore compare the stated test method, calibrated artifact, measurement length and environmental conditions rather than relying on a single headline accuracy value.
