A vacuum insulated panel (VIP) is a form of thermal insulation consisting of a nearly gas-tight enclosure surrounding a rigid core, from which the air has been evacuated. Vacuum insulation panel is the thinnest insulation with the most efficient thermal insulation. They have 8 to 10 time’s lower thermal conductivity than other conventional insulation materials such as rigid foam boards, foam beads or fiber blankets. The main components of a VIP are inner core, barrier envelope and getters and desiccants. The envelope could either consist of thick metal sheets or multilayer barrier of metalized polymeric layers to provide protection against environmental and handling stresses.
As countries around the world improve energy efficiency standards in the fields of construction and home appliances, and as carbon neutrality policies are promoted, the demand for high-efficiency insulation materials continues to grow. VIP has become an ideal choice to replace traditional insulation materials (such as polyurethane foam and EPS) due to its excellent thermal insulation performance (thermal conductivity is usually 0.002–0.004 W/m·K), and is widely used in high-end buildings and green buildings. Products such as vaccines, insulin, and fresh food have extremely high requirements for temperature control during transportation. VIP can provide efficient thermal insulation performance in packaging with limited space, extend the insulation time, and reduce energy consumption. It is a key material for cold chain insulation boxes and refrigerated transportation equipment, and has become an important support for the development of the pharmaceutical cold chain. In white appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, the use of VIP can significantly improve insulation performance, reduce energy consumption, and extend the shelf life of food, becoming an important selling point for high-end energy-saving appliances. Especially in markets such as Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea that have high requirements for energy efficiency levels, the penetration rate of VIP has increased year by year.
