Depending on mine requirements, they may use conventional diesel powertrains or electric or battery-powered drivetrains to reduce heat and emissions underground.
From an industry and supply-chain perspective, underground haul trucks are built around high-strength frames and articulated chassis structures, with key systems including axles and driveline, transmission and torque converter where applicable, traction motors for electric variants, suspension and steering, braking systems, hydraulic systems, cooling packages, and operator cabins with safety and monitoring electronics. Upstream inputs include steel plates and castings, powertrain components, hydraulic pumps and cylinders, tires designed for underground mining, electronic control units, sensors, and wiring harnesses. Typical production lines cover frame fabrication and welding, machining, powertrain and axle assembly, hydraulic and electrical integration, cab and safety system installation, vehicle assembly, commissioning, and end-of-line testing. Downstream users are underground mining operators producing minerals such as copper, gold, nickel, zinc, and potash, and trucks are usually purchased through mining equipment OEMs with aftermarket parts and service support being critical to lifecycle value.
With increasingly stringent environmental policies and technological advancements, electrification and intelligentization have become mainstream trends. Electric mining trucks are gaining market share due to their zero emissions and low operating costs.
