UCO Biofuel refers to low-carbon liquid fuels produced from used cooking oil, waste cooking oil, food processing waste oils and certified mixed waste lipids through dehydration, impurity removal, acid reduction, transesterification, esterification, hydrotreating or HEFA conversion routes. The main products include UCO-based FAME biodiesel, HVO renewable diesel and selected UCO-based sustainable aviation fuel, which are used in road diesel blending, bus and logistics fleets, marine fuel, industrial fuel and aviation fuel blending. The upstream supply chain mainly consists of restaurants, catering chains, hotels, canteens, food processors, waste oil collectors, pretreatment companies, methanol, catalysts, hydrogen, adsorbents, filtration materials and storage facilities; downstream customers mainly include fuel traders, fuel blenders, refineries, aviation fuel suppliers, bus and logistics fleet operators, marine fuel users, industrial boiler users and low-carbon fuel compliance market participants. On an ex-factory price basis, global nominal capacity of UCO biofuel in 2025 is estimated at about 17.18 million tons, with actual sales volume of about 13.26 million tons and an average ex-factory price of about USD 1,403 per ton. The industry average gross margin is estimated at around 12%–24%.
The current market is moving from conventional waste-oil-based biodiesel toward higher-value utilization of used cooking oil resources. Early demand was mainly driven by road fuel blending and industrial fuel applications, where the product was positioned more as a cost substitute and waste recycling solution. In recent years, low-carbon fuel policies, aviation decarbonization requirements and energy companies’ transition strategies have made used cooking oil an increasingly important feedstock for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. Competition is no longer defined only by fuel production capacity, but also by feedstock collection networks, pretreatment stability, sustainability certification, cross-border supply chain control and access to qualified end users.

Chinese companies are also upgrading from conventional biodiesel exports to sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel and higher-end bio-based fuels, improving their position in the global value chain.
Future growth will be mainly driven by transport decarbonization, low-carbon aviation fuel demand, low-carbon fuel standards, circular resource utilization and the shift of energy-sector capital expenditure toward renewable fuels. Used cooking oil has strong appeal in compliance-driven markets because of its waste-derived nature and favorable emission reduction profile, especially in fuel systems that require feedstock traceability and lifecycle carbon reduction. As airlines, refineries, fuel traders and commercial fleet operators increase procurement of low-carbon fuels, companies with stable feedstock access and robust certification systems are more likely to secure long-term offtake agreements and pricing premiums.
The main constraints are limited supply of authentic and traceable feedstock, fragmented collection systems, feedstock price volatility, rising certification costs and trade policy uncertainty. Used cooking oil is not an unlimited resource, and competition for qualified feedstock will intensify as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel projects ramp up. This could compress margins for some conventional biodiesel producers. The industry also faces risks related to false feedstock claims, cross-border compliance reviews, anti-dumping investigations, subsidy policy changes and adjustments to blending mandates. In the long run, integrated companies with feedstock control, conversion technology, certification capability and strong customer relationships are likely to gain a stronger competitive position.
