Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation instrument and an important neuromodulatory device.
The transcranial direct current stimulator uses constant, low-intensity direct current (usually in the range of 1~2mA) to regulate the activity of neurons in specific areas of the cerebral cortex. This weak direct current acts on the brain through the scalp and skull, thereby changing the resting membrane potential of neurons, regulating the excitability of neurons, thereby exciting neurons, and affecting the synaptic connection function between neurons, causing neuroplastic changes, thereby playing a neuromodulatory role.
The structure of a transcranial direct current stimulator generally includes two different electrodes (positive and negative), a stimulation parameter setting and control system, and corresponding power supply equipment. Among them, the electrode is the key component for transmitting current, while the stimulation parameter setting and control system is used to adjust the intensity, duration and other parameters of the current to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
The stimulation methods of transcranial direct current stimulators mainly include anode stimulation, cathode stimulation and sham stimulation. Anode stimulation usually enhances the excitability of neurons at the stimulation site, cathode stimulation reduces the excitability of neurons at the stimulation site, and sham stimulation is mostly used as a control stimulation to evaluate the therapeutic effect.
