Carbon fiber is usually combined with high-performance resins such as epoxy resin and BMI, and composite materials are formed through processes such as prepreg, weaving, winding, automatic fiber placement, and RTM. Toray's high-end prepreg system has also been used in conjunction with T1100 series fibers in high-performance aerospace structures. Downstream applications primarily include aircraft and engine structural components, launch vehicles and satellites, missiles and other defense equipment, high-pressure hydrogen storage cylinders, aerospace pressure vessels, high-end automotive structural components, and high-performance sports and leisure products. Meanwhile, Hexcel's IM9, launched in recent years, has achieved an average bundle tensile strength exceeding 6,300 MPa and a modulus of approximately 298 GPa, reflecting the continued advancement of high-strength, medium-modulus carbon fiber upgrades by international manufacturers. However, this field still faces significant barriers, including high-quality PAN precursor preparation, nanoscale defect control, high-temperature carbonization processes, batch consistency, composite material interface control, and long aerospace certification cycles. Therefore, it is expected that the future market will not simply evolve into large-scale, low-price competition in the ordinary industrial-grade carbon fiber market. Instead, it is more likely that a few companies with capabilities in precursor, carbonization, resin systems, and application certification will dominate the high-end market, with products continuing to develop towards higher strength, higher modulus, higher toughness, and lower structural weight.
