The main upstream raw materials for SOFC/SOEC include the following: electrolyte materials (YSZ / ScSZ / GDC, etc.), cathode/anode materials (LSCF/LSM, NiO, composite powders/inks), bipolar plates and structural components (interconnect alloys/coated strip steel), sealing materials (glass / glass-ceramic seals, sealing frits/pastes), etc.
In the context of the turnaround in energy policy, research focusses on technologies that can be used for the decentralized production of renewable (green) hydrogen (electrolyzer) or the reconversion of hydrogen into electricity (fuel cell). SOCs contain a dense oxygen-ion conducting ceramic as electrolyte.
