Sintered metal friction materials are high-performance friction materials made mainly from copper-based, iron-based, bronze-based, metal-ceramic or low-copper metal powders, combined with graphite, ceramic particles, abrasives, lubricants, friction modifiers and wear-resistant fillers. They are produced through powder mixing, pressing, high-temperature sintering, sizing and finishing, and are processed into brake pads, railway brake blocks, clutch plates, wet/dry friction plates, friction blocks and friction discs. Compared with organic, resin-based and conventional semi-metallic materials, sintered metal materials provide stronger fade resistance, wear durability and friction stability under high-temperature, high-speed, high-energy, wet, muddy, heavy-load and repeated-braking conditions. Downstream applications include motorcycles, rail transit, wind power, construction machinery, mining, agricultural machinery, industrial clutches, aerospace, marine and racing.
In 2025, global sintered metal friction materials production reached approximately 140 million pcs, with an average global market price is $10 per pc.
Sintered metal friction materials are high-performance friction material systems made primarily from copper, iron, bronze, stainless steel, and other metallic powders, combined with graphite, ceramic particles, lubricants, abrasives, friction modifiers, and functional fillers. They are manufactured through powder mixing, pressing, high-temperature sintering, machining, and backing-plate bonding. Their key characteristics include high metallic content, strong thermal stability, good wear resistance, and high load-carrying capability, allowing them to maintain relatively stable friction performance under high temperature, high load, high speed, frequent engagement, or severe braking conditions.
By material system, sintered metal friction materials can be segmented into copper-based sintered materials, iron-based sintered materials, bronze-based sintered materials, copper-iron composite sintered materials, low-copper or copper-free sintered materials, and high-performance composite sintered materials. Copper- and bronze-based materials typically offer strong thermal conductivity, friction stability, and compatibility with mating surfaces, making them common in motorcycle brake pads, high-speed railway brake pads, and high-performance braking applications. Iron-based materials offer advantages in strength, wear resistance, and cost, and are used in selected heavy-duty, industrial braking, and high-pressure friction-pair applications. Copper-iron composite and low-copper or copper-free systems are increasingly driven by environmental regulation, brake-dust control, and sustainable material requirements.In terms of applications, sintered metal friction materials are used in dry brakes, wet brakes, dry clutches, wet clutches, railway braking, motorcycle braking, wind turbine yaw or braking systems, construction machinery, mining machinery, agricultural machinery, marine equipment, and industrial drivetrains.
Compared with organic friction materials, paper-based wet friction materials, and resin-based systems, sintered metal friction materials are better suited to high energy density, high thermal cycling, high contact pressure, and long-life operating conditions. However, they must also balance noise, mating-disc wear, low-temperature braking feel, cost, and environmental compliance. Product performance depends not only on metallic powder formulation, but also on powder particle size, sintering temperature, porosity, lubricant-phase distribution, tribofilm formation, backing-plate bonding strength, mating material, working pressure, and heat dissipation conditions.
From an industry perspective, demand for sintered metal friction materials is mainly driven by high-performance motorcycles, railway transportation, wind power equipment, construction machinery, mining machinery, agricultural machinery, commercial vehicles, and industrial braking systems.
