A SiC Seed Wafer is a high-quality single-crystal SiC wafer used as the seed in bulk SiC crystal growth—most commonly Physical Vapor Transport (PVT). During PVT, SiC source material sublimates at high temperature and the vapor species are transported to a cooler region where they deposit and crystallize on the seed, forming a monocrystalline SiC boule. The seed wafer therefore acts as the crystallographic “template” that governs the grown boule’s polytype, orientation, and surface polarity.
Upstream, seed wafers are typically prepared from previously grown high-quality SiC boules (often from the same supply chain used to make device substrates). The boule is sliced and processed through steps such as lapping/grinding and CMP (chemical–mechanical polishing) to achieve the required flatness, low roughness, and low subsurface damage. Seed wafers are also commonly specified with a controlled off-cut (miscut) to preserve polytype and enable step-flow growth behavior in subsequent epitaxy and/or controlled crystal growth.
Downstream, the seed wafer is mounted in the PVT crucible (typically at the top/lid, in the cooler zone) to initiate and stabilize boule growth; in diameter-expansion practice, wafers sliced from an enlarged boule can be characterized and re-selected as seeds for the next growth run, enabling stepwise scale-up. The resulting boules are then sliced into SiC substrates for end markets such as power electronics and RF electronics.
