According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Shipboard CO₂ Capture market size was valued at US$ 287 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 1161 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 25.1% during review period.
Shipborne CO₂ capture refers to a complete technology that separates, captures, liquefies, and temporarily stores carbon dioxide in exhaust gases produced by the combustion of fossil fuels in a ship's engines or boilers during navigation, and finally unloads the gas at port for resource utilization or permanent storage.
In terms of technical approach, post-combustion chemical absorption is the mainstream method for shipborne CO₂ capture systems. Exhaust gases from the ship's main and auxiliary engines first undergo pretreatment, including desulfurization, denitrification, dust removal, and cooling, reducing the levels of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter to acceptable levels. The purified exhaust gas is then introduced into an absorption tower, where it comes into full contact with a chemical solvent (usually a novel amine solution represented by monoethanolamine or methyldiethanolamine) that has high selectivity and absorption efficiency for carbon dioxide. The vast majority of the carbon dioxide is selectively absorbed by the solvent, while the unabsorbed purified gas is directly released into the atmosphere. The rich solution, having absorbed carbon dioxide, is preheated via a lean-rich solution heat exchanger and then fed into a regeneration tower. Inside the regeneration tower, it is heated and decomposed by externally supplied heat energy, releasing a high-concentration, high-purity carbon dioxide gas stream. The regenerated lean solution is then cooled and recycled back to the absorption tower to continue participating in the capture process. The carbon dioxide gas stream released from the top of the regeneration tower undergoes multiple stages of processing, including compression, dehydration, and condensation, before finally being liquefied and stored in specially designed cryogenic liquid carbon dioxide storage tanks on the ship.
Currently, the most mature approach is the chemical absorption route, represented by amine absorbents. Its advantages include high capture rates, mature technology, and relatively easy production of high-purity carbon dioxide. However, the amine method also faces challenges such as high regeneration heat consumption, large equipment size, absorbent management, and onboard energy consumption. Therefore, the market is actively developing other routes, such as sodium hydroxide, calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide mineralization, membrane separation, and cryogenic separation. Companies like Seabound reduce liquefaction pressure by converting carbon dioxide into stable carbonates, while some systems aim to reduce absorbent regeneration energy consumption through waste heat recovery.
From a ship type perspective, large ocean-going vessels are expected to be the first sector to achieve significant market scale in shipborne carbon dioxide capture. The commercial value is particularly prominent in tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, LNG carriers, LNG carriers, and other large gas carriers. These vessels have higher annual fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, so installing a capture system of the same investment scale can generate greater absolute emission reductions. Furthermore, their hull space, deck space, and energy systems are generally better suited to accommodate absorber towers, regeneration units, compressed liquefaction equipment, and storage tanks compared to smaller vessels. For existing large ships, the retrofit market will be the most important source of demand in the short to medium term; while in the new shipbuilding sector, more ship types will gradually emerge that reserve space for equipment, pipelines, tank interfaces and energy conditions during the design phase.
