According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Ship-based Carbon Capture (SBCC) market size was valued at US$ 196 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 908 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 27.0% during review period.
Ship-based carbon capture (SBCC) is a technology designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) from exhaust gases generated during ship navigation. This technology is considered a key pathway for the international shipping industry to achieve a green transformation and cope with increasingly stringent carbon emission regulations. The core working principle of the SBCC system is post-combustion capture, which involves treating the exhaust gases emitted after combustion in ship engines or boilers. During capture, the exhaust gases come into contact with a chemical solvent (such as monoethanolamine (MEA)) that selectively absorbs CO₂. The CO₂-rich liquid is then regenerated through heating and other methods, releasing a high-concentration CO₂ stream. This high-concentration CO₂ is then compressed and liquefied, and temporarily stored in dedicated CO₂ tanks on board. When the ship docks, this liquid CO₂ can be unloaded and transported ashore for permanent geological storage (such as injection into depleted oil and gas fields or deep brine aquifers), or used as a raw material for the production of e-fuels, chemical products, etc., thus achieving resource utilization.
Wärtsilä, Panasia, and Ecospray are among the companies that have adopted or developed this approach. Meanwhile, to reduce regeneration heat consumption and equipment size, some companies have begun using alkaline or mineralization technologies such as NaOH and CaO/Ca(OH)₂ to convert CO₂ into carbonates or solid calcium carbonate. Langh Tech uses NaOH to form stable Na₂CO₃, while Seabound converts CO₂ into CaCO₃ through a calcium cycle. DNV currently considers chemical absorption, membrane separation, cryogenic separation, and mineralization as its primary shipboard afterburning capture routes.
The key to future product competition will not just be the nominal "capture rate," but a comprehensive balance between net emission reduction rates, energy consumption, land use, weight, and cargo hold losses. Capture, solvent regeneration, CO₂ compression, and liquefaction all require heat and electricity, leading to additional fuel consumption increases. DNV's system simulations for Suezmax tankers show that even with simple modifications, additional energy consumption can reach high levels. However, advanced solvent, waste heat recovery, and efficient liquefaction systems can significantly reduce fuel penalties and improve net emissions reductions. Therefore, tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, and large gas carriers with large main engine power, abundant waste heat resources, large deck space, and relatively fixed routes are more suitable for adopting SBCC (Ship-Based Carrier Combustion) than smaller vessels with limited space and highly dispersed routes.
Another factor determining whether the market can truly scale up is port CO₂ unloading and downstream CCUS (Carrier-Based Storage and Recycling) infrastructure. Capturing CO₂ does not equate to permanent emissions reduction: liquid CO₂ or mineralized products must be successfully unloaded upon berthing and integrated into transportation, utilization, or permanent geological storage systems. A recent study by ICS/Lloyd’s Register in 2026 clearly states that while OCCS technology itself is already quite mature, large-scale commercial deployment still depends on three gaps: ship integration, CO₂ disposal infrastructure, and regulatory/carbon accounting certainty.
