Non-powered reusable APRs rely on the wearer’s inhalation to draw air through filters or cartridges, while PAPRs use a battery-powered blower to deliver filtered air into a facepiece, hood, helmet, or headgear. They are used to reduce exposure to dusts, fumes, aerosols, organic vapors, acid gases, multi-gas hazards, chemical contaminants, and bioaerosols in manufacturing, chemicals, oil and gas, mining, construction, painting, welding, pharmaceuticals, laboratories, healthcare infection control, public health preparedness, and emergency response. Compared with disposable filtering facepiece respirators, reusable APRs offer stronger reuse value, broader filter compatibility, and better lifecycle economics. Compared with supplied-air respirators and SCBA, they are lighter and more economical, but they can only be used in oxygen-sufficient environments where the contaminants can be removed by appropriate filtration media.
