A Pulse Width Modulation Modem is a circuit system that works in tandem with another circuit. Its core function is to perform a complete conversion of a signal from the analog domain to the digital pulse domain and back to the analog domain. Its operation consists of two stages: modulation and demodulation.
In the modulation stage, the modulator converts the instantaneous amplitude of the input analog signal (such as voice) into a series of rectangular pulses with a fixed frequency but varying pulse width (i.e., duty cycle). The basic principle is to use a comparator to compare the input signal with a periodic reference signal (such as a sawtooth wave). When the signal amplitude is higher than the reference wave, the output is high.
In the demodulation stage, the demodulator needs to reconstruct the original analog signal from the received PWM signal. This can be achieved in several ways. The simplest way is to use a low-pass filter, because the average DC component of the PWM signal is proportional to its duty cycle; filtering yields an approximate original signal.
