Preformed line fittings are line hardware assemblies made from preformed helical wires, armor rods, reinforcing rods and associated hardware. They distribute gripping force over a relatively long contact area on conductors, earth wires, OPGW or ADSS cables, enabling tensioning, suspension, splicing, repair, vibration control, protection and downlead fixation. Their practical value lies in reducing localized crushing and stress concentration, protecting conductor or cable surfaces, and improving field-installation efficiency. Key upstream materials include aluminum-clad steel wire, aluminum-alloy wire, galvanized steel, ductile iron, high-strength aluminum, zinc-aluminum corrosion-protection coatings, elastomeric cushions and stainless-steel fasteners. Major end uses include transmission lines, distribution networks, OPGW communication systems, ADSS optical-cable routes, renewable-energy export lines, line-repair projects and harsh-environment networks exposed to wind, ice, salt spray or corrosion.
In 2025, global preformed line fittings production reached approximately 30 million units, with an average global market price is $40 per unit.
Preformed line fittings are helically preformed line hardware installed on overhead transmission lines, overhead distribution lines, earth wires, OPGW optical ground wires, ADSS all-dielectric self-supporting optical cables, and guy wire systems. By function, preformed line fittings can generally be classified into five major categories. The first category is dead-end and terminal anchoring fittings, including preformed dead-end clamps, conductor dead-end grips, guy grips, and preformed terminal assemblies. These products are mainly used at line terminals, angle towers, strain poles, sectionalizing points, and guy wire systems, where they carry the axial loads of conductors, earth wires, OPGW, or ADSS cables. The second category is suspension and tie fittings, including preformed suspension clamps, top ties, side ties, insulator ties, and distribution conductor securing fittings, which are used to suspend or fasten conductors and optical cables to insulators, crossarms, or tower support structures. The third category is protection and repair fittings, including armor rods, preformed protection rods, repair rods, reinforcing rods, and conductor repair assemblies. These products help reduce abrasion, vibration fatigue, and compression damage at suspension points, dead-end points, jumper connections, and locally damaged conductor sections. The fourth category is splicing and conductive connection fittings, including preformed splice rods, full-tension splices, jumper connection assemblies, and certain conductor branching structures, which are used for conductor continuation, repair, and mechanical reinforcement. The fifth category is communication cable and vibration-control fittings, including OPGW dead-end clamps, OPGW suspension clamps, ADSS dead-end clamps, optical cable vibration dampers, down-lead clamps, cable storage brackets, and grounding accessories. These products support the load-bearing, suspension, vibration control, down-lead routing, and grounding requirements of power utility communication networks.
In OPGW and ADSS applications, preformed line fittings not only provide mechanical retention but also directly affect the long-term operating reliability of optical cables. OPGW fittings must typically balance earth-wire mechanical loading, electrical continuity, grounding requirements, vibration resistance, and optical-fiber excess-length protection. ADSS fittings place greater emphasis on cable bending radius, side pressure, tension distribution, wind-induced vibration control, and suitability for high-electric-field environments. In particular, for installations near high-voltage towers, ADSS cable and fitting selection must consider electric-field intensity, pollution, humidity, dry-band arcing, and long-term aging risks. Within overhead-line accessory standards, EN 50397-2 specifies performance and testing requirements for accessories installed on aerial insulated conductors rated above 1 kV and up to 36 kV, while IEC TR 61328:2024 covers selection and installation guidance for overhead conductors, earth wires, associated pulling equipment, grounding devices, and line-installation accessories used in transmission and distribution systems.
Technological development in the preformed line fittings industry is moving toward higher reliability, conductor-friendly designs, high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, rapid installation, modularized configurations, and full life-cycle maintenance. Continued development of renewable-energy transmission projects, interregional power transmission, ultra-high-voltage grid construction, aging-line refurbishment, high-temperature low-sag conductor replacement, distribution-network automation, distributed photovoltaic interconnection, and utility communication-network expansion is expected to sustain demand for preformed dead-end, suspension, protection, repair, vibration-control, and OPGW/ADSS fittings.
