Midstream activities include calcination of petroleum coke, crushing and grading, paste preparation, vibro-compaction or molding, baking in ring furnaces, rodding, and quality testing conducted by specialized carbon producers. Downstream customers are aluminum smelters that use prebaked anodes in electrolytic reduction cells to produce primary aluminum for industries such as automotive, aerospace, construction, electrical transmission, packaging, consumer goods, and renewable energy systems. The industry is closely linked to aluminum production growth, energy costs, carbon-emission regulations, petroleum refining output, and the availability of high-quality needle and sponge coke feedstocks.
