According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Polycarbodiimide Crosslinker market size was valued at US$ 159 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 249 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 6.5% during review period.
Polycarbodiimide Crosslinkers are polymeric or multifunctional carbodiimide-based specialty crosslinking agents designed primarily to react with carboxyl-functional polymers. They are widely used with waterborne polyurethane dispersions, acrylic emulsions, water-dispersible polyesters and other carboxyl-containing polymers to improve water resistance, chemical resistance, wet adhesion, abrasion resistance and coating durability. Commercial products are mainly supplied as approximately 30%–50% aqueous solutions, emulsions or dispersions, although 100%-solids grades are also available. Small-molecule laboratory carbodiimide coupling reagents and polycarbodiimides used primarily as hydrolysis stabilizers for thermoplastics are excluded. The upstream industry includes aliphatic and other specialty diisocyanates, hydrophilic modifiers, polyols, solvents, water, catalysts and other functional intermediates. Midstream manufacturers conduct carbodiimidation, molecular-weight and functionality control, hydrophilic modification, dispersion, formulation, quality control and application testing to produce waterborne, solvent-carried and high-solids polycarbodiimide crosslinkers. Representative suppliers include Nisshinbo Chemical, Stahl, Covestro, Lamberti, Technical Control and emerging Chinese manufacturers. Downstream customers include manufacturers of industrial coatings, automotive coatings, wood coatings, packaging coatings and inks, waterborne adhesives, synthetic leather, footwear materials, textiles, technical films and specialty surface-treatment systems.
The Polycarbodiimide Crosslinker market is structurally different from the broader crosslinker market. Its growth is driven primarily by substitution within high-performance waterborne formulations rather than by total coatings volume. Polycarbodiimides provide room-temperature curing, long pot life, low or zero VOC formulations and reduced hazard labeling while delivering strong chemical, water and abrasion resistance. These characteristics position PCDI as an increasingly important alternative to polyaziridines and, in selected applications, conventional isocyanate crosslinkers. Stahl's 2025 expansion of carbodiimide technology into high-performance packaging coatings supports this substitution trend. However, PCDI remains a relatively expensive specialty crosslinker. Its economics are strongest in automotive interiors, packaging, technical films, industrial coatings, synthetic leather and premium waterborne adhesives where longer pot life, regulatory advantages or improved durability justify the additive cost. Increasing Chinese production should reduce pricing in conventional 30%–50% waterborne grades, but advanced hyperfunctional and 100%-solids products should retain stronger pricing power. In 2025, global Polycarbodiimide Crosslinker production was approximately 11.48 thousand metric tons on an as-supplied commercial-product basis. The estimated volume-weighted average selling price was approximately US$13,500 per metric ton. Major manufacturers had an estimated gross profit margin range of approximately 28%–46%. Global effective production capacity was approximately 15.31 thousand metric tons.
