High-end products, conversely, utilize synthetic mesophase pitch, which is prepared via catalytic polymerization using pure aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g., naphthalene or methylnaphthalene) as feedstock. This approach offers controllable raw material purity and a highly ordered molecular structure, though the associated costs are significantly higher than those of the natural pitch route. Overall, raw material costs account for approximately 30% to 40% of the total production cost. The graphitization stage—involving high-temperature treatment between 2000°C and 3000°C—consumes vast amounts of energy; consequently, electricity costs can account for as much as 40% to 50% of the total cost structure, making this the most critical cost component. Upstream processes—including spinning, pre-oxidation, and carbonization—along with equipment depreciation and labor costs, collectively account for the remaining 15% to 20%. Due to the extremely high temperature requirements for graphitization and the substantial capital investment required for equipment, the production cost of pitch-based graphitized carbon fiber is significantly higher than that of PAN-based carbon fiber.
