The main manufacturing process for photochromic films revolves around photoresponsive molecules such as spiropyran, spiroxazine, and naphthopyran. There are two main approaches: coating and bulk coating. The coating method disperses the color-changing molecules into acrylic or polyurethane resin and then coats them onto a PET/TAC substrate using a scraping or slot coating method, followed by a hardened layer for scratch resistance. The bulk coating method copolymerizes or grafts the color-changing groups into the polymer backbone, resulting in significantly better fatigue and weather resistance. The high-end segment utilizes UV curing with nano-inorganic doping and electric field-assisted directional film formation to achieve responses in the 10-second range and fades in the 30-second range. The dry-side replacement of wet-side coating for laminated glass is a key technological trend in the construction and automotive sectors in recent years.
The global market is mainly concentrated in the automotive and building sector. PPG, Saint-Gobain, and Fuyao are promoting photochromic laminated glass to compete with electrochromic panoramic sunroofs. The latter is actually making more progress in the new energy vehicle sector, but it belongs to another line of voltage activation.
