This study focuses on radar equipment and integrated systems that use phased-array electronic scanning for meteorological, hydrological, aviation-weather, and low-altitude safety applications.
Based on our research, phased-array weather radar equipment represents a generational shift in meteorological sensing rather than a simple extension of conventional Doppler weather radar. The market is still a growth-stage niche rather than a fully mature replacement cycle, because procurement remains project-based and large-scale national network replacement has not yet started in most countries.
Demand growth will be driven by four major application clusters: severe convective-weather nowcasting, hydrological rainfall and flood monitoring, airport and air-traffic weather safety, and emerging low-altitude micro-meteorological networks. China’s procurement momentum is supported by local meteorological modernization, water-management needs, airport safety requirements, and the rapid development of low-altitude economic applications. In the United States and Japan, growth is more likely to be linked to next-generation radar-network research, technology validation, and selected operational deployments before any large replacement cycle begins. As a result, the industry is likely to grow through phased deployment in high-value regions and mission-critical scenarios rather than through an immediate global replacement of conventional radar networks.
From a technology and competition perspective, the market will evolve along two parallel product routes. Large S- and C-band systems will target national weather services, aviation meteorology, and regional severe-weather monitoring, where range, reliability, vertical structure observation, and operational integration are critical. Smaller X- and Ku-band systems will support dense networks for cities, watersheds, airports, low-altitude corridors, and localized nowcasting. Competitive advantage will not be determined solely by antenna hardware or transmit-receive modules; it will increasingly depend on radar-control software, polarimetric rainfall algorithms, clutter suppression, multi-radar mosaicking, nowcasting products, system integration, and lifecycle service capabilities. Over the long term, leading suppliers are expected to move from standalone radar delivery toward integrated “equipment + software platform + networked sensing + data service” models.
