According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global PHA/PLA Composites market size was valued at US$ 1096 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 1937 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 8.5% during review period.
PHA/PLA composites are fully biodegradable materials created by blending polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) using physical or chemical methods, aiming to overcome the performance limitations of single-material composites. They combine the rigidity of PLA with the flexibility of PHA and represent one of the key technological routes currently being developed in the field of bio-based plastics.
The main purpose of combining PLA and PHA is to address the inherent problems of PLA's high brittleness and poor impact resistance.
Significant toughening effect: Studies have shown that adding only a small amount of PHA (e.g., 12 wt.%) can increase the toughness of the composite by approximately 50% compared to pure PLA.
Complementary performance balance: PLA contributes high strength and high rigidity, while PHA provides excellent flexibility and impact toughness, solving the brittleness problem of PLA.
Optimal specific ratio: Research shows that a PHA/PLA ratio of 30/70 produces the best synergistic effect, resulting in the highest overall mechanical properties.
Limitations of certain properties: Adding PHA may lead to a decrease in the heat distortion temperature (HDT) of the composite. However, these shortcomings can be effectively compensated for by adding nanofillers (such as TiO₂) or natural fibers as reinforcements.
Upstream raw materials for PHA/PLA composites include PLA raw materials (starch-based), PHA raw materials (diversified carbon sources), PLA enzymes, PHA production strains, and fermentation aids. The core midstream includes basic resin production and PHA/PLA composite modification, while downstream applications are mainly in packaging, disposable products, and other fields.
In 2025, global sales of PHA/PLA composites reached 60,500 tons, with a production capacity of approximately 87,000 tons, an average selling price of US$17.6/kg, and an average gross profit margin of 35%-42%.
