Upstream inputs include nickel sources (such as nickel nitrate and nickel carbonate), precious metal precursors (such as palladium chloride and chloroplatinic acid), supports (such as alumina, silica, and silica-alumina composites), as well as additives (such as zinc and magnesium), binders, pore-forming agents, and stabilizers. Downstream users are petroleum resin manufacturers; the process typically involves dissolving the resin in a saturated hydrocarbon solvent and filtering out impurities before using a slurry reactor or fixed-bed reactor to carry out hydrogenation, decolorization, and necessary hydrodesulfurization. The final product is a water-white or light-colored hydrogenated petroleum resin supplied to markets such as adhesives, hygiene materials, coatings, inks, plastics, and rubber modification.
Global sales volume is projected to reach approximately 4,000 tons in 2025. Prices typically range from $15–$35 per kilogram for nickel-based products and $200–$500 per kilogram for precious metal-based products, with major manufacturers achieving gross margins of approximately 28%–40%.
