Perovskite stacked cells are multi-junction solar cells constructed by connecting a perovskite absorber layer in series with another semiconductor material (such as silicon, CIGS, or perovskite). Compared to single-junction cells, stacked cells expand the spectral range by absorbing photons of different wavelengths in sunlight through each layer, thus achieving higher photoelectric conversion efficiency and potentially higher output power. The perovskite/silicon stack is the most popular approach in the industry, with a wide-bandgap perovskite layer on top and a narrow-bandgap silicon layer at the bottom. All-perovskite stacked cells may have multiple layers of perovskite material with different bandgap sizes to cover a wider spectrum, making them suitable for startups. Perovskite/organic material stacks are also under research. Compared to ordinary perovskite cells, stacked cells are considered an important path to breaking through the efficiency limits of single-junction cells. In 2024, global perovskite stacked cell production reached 580.5 MW, with an average selling price of $0.29/W and a gross margin of 29.8%-33.74%. Production Capacity: Hubei Wandu Solar Energy Co., Ltd.'s 3GW perovskite photovoltaic module production project has officially settled in Fuyang. The company will simultaneously plan a 30GW perovskite module project, a 10,000-ton-per-year perovskite material production project, and a perovskite module equipment project. On November 14, 2025, the Zhongshan Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment accepted the application for a new project of 250MW perovskite crystalline silicon tandem solar cells and 350,000 sets of modules per year from Heijing Optoelectronics (Zhongshan) Co., Ltd. Liyuan New Energy has built an 8,000-square-meter 100MW perovskite solar cell R&D and production base, with a cumulative investment of over 100 million yuan. Perovskite solar cells are solar cells that utilize perovskite-type organometal halide semiconductors as light-absorbing materials, belonging to the third generation of solar cells. Third-generation solar cells mainly refer to some new concept cells with high conversion efficiency, such as dye-sensitized cells, quantum dot cells, and organic solar cells, also known as new concept solar cells. Perovskite solar cells have a similar layered structure to traditional photovoltaic cells. They mainly consist of five layers: a transparent conductive substrate, an electron transport layer (ETL), a perovskite light-absorbing layer, a hole transport layer (HTL), and a metal electrode. Perovskite cells combine the advantages of first-generation crystalline silicon cells (stability, high efficiency, and low cost) with the advantages of second-generation inorganic thin-film cells (high theoretical efficiency and simple fabrication process). They achieve higher theoretical efficiency using low-cost raw materials, driving efficiency improvement and cost reduction in the photovoltaic industry, and opening up long-term market potential—a next-generation solar cell technology. Perovskite cells mainly include two technical routes: single-junction and tandem. The theoretical limit photoelectric conversion efficiencies of single-junction and tandem cells are 33% and 44%, respectively, with tandem cells exhibiting higher conversion efficiency compared to crystalline silicon cells. Perovskite tandem solar cells offer significant efficiency improvements and represent the next stage of development for crystalline silicon. With crystalline silicon module costs falling below 1 yuan/W, the cost-effectiveness logic of a single perovskite cell is no longer viable. Perovskite-crystalline silicon tandem solar cells are compatible with existing crystalline silicon production capacity and can be combined with existing HJT and TOPCon technologies. Upgrading products can be achieved simply by adding perovskite processing to existing production lines. The resulting tandem modules are expected to achieve efficiencies exceeding 30%, representing a generational difference compared to traditional crystalline silicon. Perovskite cell manufacturers, crystalline silicon manufacturers, and equipment manufacturers have reached a consensus on the tandem technology route, which is poised to become the industry mainstream.
