Permanent via plugging ink is a high-viscosity functional ink used for permanent filling of through holes, blind vias, and buried vias in printed circuit boards and package substrates. It is typically based on epoxy or modified resin systems, combined with fillers, curing agents, and rheology additives. After screen printing, stencil printing, vacuum via plugging, or automatic filling, it is cured and ground, and can undergo subsequent copper capping. The product's gross margin is approximately 42%.
The unit price of permanent via plugging ink is significantly higher than that of ordinary solder mask ink, but its use is concentrated in high-layer-count boards, HDI boards, package substrates, and via-in-pad copper capping applications, so its market size is smaller than that of conventional solder mask ink.
Demand growth mainly comes from high-density packaging, AI servers, 5G communications, automotive electronics, and power electronics. As BGA, CSP, FC-PKG, and HDI boards move toward smaller via diameters, higher aspect ratios, and narrower pad spacing, ordinary ink covering or partial via plugging can no longer meet requirements for flatness, thermal shock resistance, and reliability. As a result, the penetration of permanent via plugging ink continues to rise in via-in-pad, blind/buried via, and structures requiring subsequent copper capping.
On the supply side, mature electronic chemical companies from Japan, Germany, the UK, and Taiwan occupy the high-end market, while mainland Chinese companies are accelerating substitution in high-layer-count boards and standard HDI grades. Competition focuses on low CTE, high Tg, low shrinkage, easy grindability, copper capping adhesion, halogen-free performance, and high-reliability validation. Future prices are unlikely to decline significantly, and growth will come more from high-end PCB capacity expansion and certified adoption of domestic materials.
