Oxygen-18 Water is a stable isotope-labeled water in which the oxygen component is enriched with the stable isotope oxygen-18. It is commonly expressed as H₂¹⁸O, Water-¹⁸O or O-18 Water. Compared with ordinary water, its basic chemical behavior is similar, but the enriched oxygen isotope gives it high value as a nuclear target material, isotope tracer and analytical reagent. In the radiopharmaceutical industry, high-enrichment Oxygen-18 Water is mainly used as the liquid target material in cyclotrons to generate fluorine-18, which is then used to synthesize fluorine-18 labeled PET radiopharmaceuticals such as ¹⁸F-FDG.
The upstream raw materials and inputs of Oxygen-18 Water mainly include natural water or oxygen-containing feedstocks with natural oxygen isotope composition, high-purity water, oxygen or hydrogen related feed gases and utilities, isotope-enriched oxygen intermediates, purification consumables and high-cleanliness packaging materials. For PET and radiopharmaceutical applications, the product usually requires high oxygen-18 enrichment, low organic carbon, low ionic impurity, controlled conductivity and clean vial or bottle packaging. The downstream market is concentrated in PET radiopharmaceutical manufacturers, cyclotron centers, nuclear medicine departments, isotope research laboratories, pharmaceutical research institutions, life science laboratories and environmental isotope analysis institutions.
