Optical storage, electronic storage medium that uses low-power laser beams to record and retrieve digital (binary) data. In optical-storage technology, a laser beam encodes digital data onto an optical, or laser, disk in the form of tiny pits arranged in a spiral track on the disk's surface.

The current market is mainly divided into four categories: CDs and DVDs are suitable for low-density audio and video storage; Blu-ray Discs have a higher single-chip capacity (up to 100GB or more), suitable for high-definition video and document archiving; M-DISC focuses on century-level data preservation capabilities and is widely used in government, public security, justice, medical and other fields that cannot be tampered with; Archival Disc (AD) is jointly launched by Sony and Panasonic for the enterprise-level archiving market; and the Freezeray system is driven by Meta and has formed a high-density, low-frequency access cold storage solution based on a large-scale robotic optical library, marking the entry of optical storage into AI large model training archiving and data lake scenarios.
The core manufacturers of global optical data storage devices include Panasonic, Sony, and Zhonghuan Group, and the top three manufacturers account for about 35% of the global market share. Asia Pacific is the world's largest market, accounting for about 60% of the market share, followed by North America and Europe, accounting for 11% and 10% respectively.
