Onboard Carbon Capture System (OCCS) is a marine emission-reduction system installed on a newbuild or an existing vessel to treat exhaust gases generated by main engines, auxiliary engines and boilers. Following exhaust cooling and pretreatment, carbon dioxide is separated using conventional amine absorption, centrifugal intensified absorption, solid sorbents, alkaline mineralization or other capture processes. The captured carbon may be compressed, liquefied and stored in cryogenic tanks, retained in a carbon-rich solvent, or converted into stable carbonate solids for subsequent offloading, industrial utilization, synthetic-fuel production or permanent geological storage.
A complete OCCS normally incorporates exhaust-gas pretreatment, carbon absorption and regeneration or fixation, compression and liquefaction, onboard storage, automated control and emissions monitoring, and an offloading interface. It can be integrated into a newbuild, retrofitted to an existing vessel, or installed through a phased carbon-capture-ready configuration. Key performance indicators include rated capture capacity, design capture rate, specific energy consumption, footprint and weight, carbon dioxide purity, storage autonomy and the degree of integration with engines, boilers and waste-heat systems.
In 2025, the global shipment volume of Onboard Carbon Capture System (OCCS) is estimated at approximately 15 sets, with a price of approximately US$5 million per set and a gross margin of approximately 22% to 32%.
The international shipping industry is moving from an efficiency-led decarbonization phase toward a period in which fuel transition and absolute emissions reduction must progress simultaneously. Zero- and near-zero-carbon fuels remain constrained by production capacity, cost, bunkering infrastructure and vessel compatibility, while much of the existing ocean-going fleet still has a long remaining service life. OCCS allows shipowners to continue using established marine fuels while reducing direct carbon emissions and can be retrofitted to existing vessels. It is therefore evolving from a technology-validation tool into an asset that can control carbon exposure, improve vessel carbon intensity and extend the economic life of existing ships.
Market expansion remains constrained by energy consumption, onboard space and the availability of downstream carbon infrastructure. Conventional amine systems require absorbers, regeneration heat, compression and liquefaction equipment, and storage tanks, potentially increasing fuel consumption and reducing cargo capacity. Sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in the exhaust can also affect solvent life and operating stability. Recognition of captured carbon as a compliant emissions reduction depends on monitoring, reporting and verification, lifecycle accounting, port offloading, cross-border transportation and permanent-storage rules. Differences in machinery layouts and voyage profiles also make current projects highly customized, increasing engineering, certification and installation costs.
Near-term demand is expected to be concentrated among tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers and large container ships with high fuel consumption, significant carbon-cost exposure and predictable port calls. The market is likely to progress from modular or capture-ready systems targeting 10% to 30% reductions toward full-process systems capable of capturing 60% to 90% of emissions and incorporating compression, liquefaction and onboard storage. As port receiving networks develop, industry revenue will extend beyond equipment sales to solvents and reagents, storage and liquefaction modules, remote monitoring, maintenance, carbon verification, and carbon transportation and disposal services, creating a broader ship-to-shore carbon-management market.
