According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Non-slip Element Balloon (NSE Balloon) market size was valued at US$ 346 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 636 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 9.0% during review period.
The coronary non-slip element balloons is a specialized therapeutic device utilized in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures. Its surface is equipped with three spike-like elements—composed of nylon or polymeric materials—distributed at 120-degree intervals. The underlying principle relies on the anchoring and stress-concentrating effects of these spikes to fragment calcified plaques and dilate severely stenotic lesions through a physical cutting mechanism; this design effectively mitigates the slippage and recoil often associated with conventional balloons, making it frequently employed for the pretreatment of complex lesions.
In 2025, the global production volume of non-slip element balloons is projected to reach 620,000 units, with an average price of $542 per unit and an average gross margin of 59.5%.
Based on our research, coronary scoring balloon dilatation catheters are not simply a premium version of standard PTCA balloons. They represent a specialized lesion-preparation device category within complex PCI. Conventional coronary balloons dilate the vessel mainly through radial expansion, whereas scoring or non-slip element balloons concentrate force through external scoring elements, protruding nylon elements or dual-wire focused-force structures. This mechanism is particularly relevant when standard balloons are prone to slippage or insufficient dilation, including in-stent restenosis, ostial lesions, bifurcation lesions, fibrotic lesions and mildly to moderately calcified lesions. Regulatory classification also distinguishes cutting/scoring PTCA catheters as balloon-tipped coronary devices with cutting or scoring elements used for balloon-resistant coronary stenoses. For this reason, the present analysis adopts a narrow scope and does not merge the segment with ordinary PTCA balloons, drug-coated balloons, intravascular lithotripsy balloons or peripheral scoring balloons.
From a supply perspective, the global market is shaped by a small number of established international products and a rapidly expanding Chinese domestic supplier base. NIPRO/Goodman’s NSE ALPHA is the representative non-slip element platform, using external nylon elements to reduce slippage and enable plaque modification. OrbusNeich and Abbott’s Scoreflex NC use a dual-wire focused-force design, while Philips AngioSculpt is an established scoring balloon platform for resistant coronary lesions. In China, SINOMED TRADENT, MicroPort FireFalcon, INT Medical, Lepu Medical, APT Medical CONQUEROR Ridge, Kossel/Mixin Seledora and DK Medtech’s coronary scoring balloon products demonstrate that the market is shifting from reliance on a few imported products toward a more diversified competitive structure with domestic innovation, local regulatory approvals and broader hospital access.
Demand growth is driven more by procedural complexity than by total PCI volume alone. Aging populations, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and prior PCI history all contribute to higher rates of calcified lesions, restenosis, bifurcation disease and fibrotic lesions. These conditions increase the need for controlled lesion preparation before stenting or drug-coated balloon therapy. Compared with atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy and cutting balloons, coronary scoring balloons are positioned mainly for controlled plaque modification in fibrotic and mild-to-moderate calcified lesions. They are less aggressive than metallic cutting balloons but less effective than IVL or atherectomy for severe deep calcium. Their future role is therefore likely to be part of a broader complex PCI toolkit rather than a standalone replacement for all lesion-preparation technologies.
From a pricing and profitability perspective, coronary scoring balloons command higher ASPs and gross margins than standard PTCA balloons, but they are still below energy-based or highly complex interventional systems such as intravascular lithotripsy. In mature Western and Japanese markets, established products benefit from physician familiarity, clinical evidence and hospital procurement channels. In China, the rapid approval of domestic products is expected to accelerate local substitution and expand clinical access, but it will also increase pricing pressure over time. The long-term competitive focus will move from simply obtaining regulatory approval to achieving better deliverability, smaller crossing profiles, reliable refolding, stronger anti-slippage performance, clinical evidence generation and integration into complete complex PCI solutions.
