Naphtha hydrotreating catalysts are specialized catalysts used in the refining industry to remove impurities—such as sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen—from naphtha and to saturate olefins. By protecting downstream units sensitive to catalyst poisons (such as reforming catalysts), they serve as a core material for producing high-quality ethylene cracker feedstocks or reforming feedstocks.
Upstream raw materials primarily include alumina supports, pseudoboehmite, active metal salts (molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, tungsten, etc.), phosphorus, silicon, titanium, extrusion aids, binders, and materials for guard beds (such as silicon, arsenic, and chlorine removal agents). The alumina support determines pore structure, specific surface area, mechanical strength, and metal dispersion, while active components like CoMo and NiMo determine the capacity for desulfurization, denitrogenation, and olefin hydrogenation. For harder-to-treat feedstocks—such as coker naphtha or cracked naphtha—guard bed materials or demetallization catalysts are also required to capture impurities like silicon, arsenic, mercury, and chlorine, thereby preventing the main catalyst from being poisoned. Midstream processes involve support shaping, impregnation, drying, calcination, sulfidation/activation, and graded loading designs. Downstream applications primarily include refinery units for reforming, isomerization, gasoline refining, FCC gasoline desulfurization, and pretreatment of ethylene cracker feedstocks.
Global sales volume is projected to reach approximately 8,000 metric tons in 2025, with a prevailing ex-factory price of around $21/kg; major manufacturers in the industry typically achieve gross margins of approximately 28%–42%.
