Nanocellulose refers to cellulose-based materials in which at least one structural dimension has been reduced to the nanoscale. The principal commercial categories are cellulose nanofibers, cellulose nanocrystals and bacterial nanocellulose. These materials combine low density, high specific strength, large surface area, renewable feedstock origin, strong water-binding capacity and tunable surface chemistry. Nanocellulose is commonly supplied as an aqueous suspension, gel, paste, dry powder or composite concentrate and is used in composite materials, paper and paperboard, packaging, coatings, adhesives, food formulations, personal care products and biomedical materials. Ordinary microcrystalline cellulose and conventional cellulose fibers that have not been fibrillated to the nanoscale are excluded. In 2025, global Nano Cellulose production reached approximately 2.169 K MT.
The expansion of sustainable packaging and fiber-based materials is one of the main drivers of the nanocellulose market. Nanocellulose can improve paper strength, reduce the amount of conventional pulp required, enhance coating uniformity and provide improved oxygen and grease barrier performance. These functions support its use in recyclable paper packaging, molded fiber products and bio-based barrier coatings, particularly as packaging manufacturers seek to reduce the use of fossil-based plastics and fluorinated barrier chemicals.
Demand is also being supported by the development of lightweight and renewable composite materials. Cellulose nanofibers and cellulose nanocrystals can reinforce polymers, rubber, coatings, cementitious materials and specialty resins while adding relatively little weight. Improvements in surface modification, drying, redispersion and masterbatch technology are making nanocellulose easier to incorporate into hydrophobic polymers and industrial production systems, gradually expanding its use beyond laboratory and pilot-scale applications.
Another important driver is the increasing commercialization of nanocellulose as a multifunctional formulation additive. Its ability to control viscosity, stabilize particles, retain water, form networks and improve mechanical properties creates opportunities in paints, adhesives, personal care, food, batteries and biomedical materials. As production facilities increase utilization and manufacturers improve energy efficiency, solid-content control and continuous processing, average production costs are expected to decline, supporting broader adoption in price-sensitive industrial applications.
