According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Motor Vehicle Biofuels market size was valued at US$ 101075 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 192798 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 9.4% during review period.
Global sales of motor vehicle biofuels reached 97 million tons in 2025, with an average price of US$1,003 per ton.
Motor vehicle biofuels are liquid or gaseous fuels produced from biomass through physical, chemical, or biological conversion, specifically for spark-ignition or compression-ignition vehicle engines. They can directly replace gasoline/diesel or be blended with traditional fossil fuels in any proportion, and are characterized by being renewable, biodegradable, and (theoretically) carbon neutral.
The raw materials for motor vehicle biofuels can be broadly categorized into "three oils and one grass": vegetable oils (rapeseed, soybean, palm, etc.), animal fats (tallow, fish oil, etc.), waste oils (waste cooking oil, gutter oil), and lignocellulose (straw, forest scraps). Globally, about 70% of biodiesel still relies on vegetable oils. In Europe and America, rapeseed oil and soybean oil are the main sources. China, however, uses over ten million tons of waste oil annually as a core raw material to "avoid competing with humans for food," but this waste oil has high impurities, is scattered in collection, and has significantly higher pre-treatment costs than fresh vegetable oil.
In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for the largest proportion (60%–75%), followed by chemicals, enzymes, and energy consumption in pretreatment and esterification/fermentation stages (15%–25%), with the remainder being transportation, labor, and depreciation. Although waste oil has a low price at the plant, it requires multiple purification steps such as degumming, deacidification, and decolorization, resulting in an overall cost only 10%–15% lower than vegetable oil. Lignocellulose is difficult to hydrolyze and saccharify, and enzyme costs remain high; the cost per ton of second-generation ethanol is more than 30% higher than that of corn ethanol, and sustainable profitability has not yet been achieved.
